My First Book Supplement

My wife and I recently traveled to South Carolina, so we of course visited the Spartanburg County Library and the South Carolina Archives in Columbia.

Both libraries had wonderful and friendly staff!

At the Columbia Archives, one book in particular had interesting entries:

"Spartanburg County / District South Carolina Deed Abstracts Books A-T (1785-1827)"

Two entries referencing William Cornwell, father of John Cornwell (of Bedford County, TN) were found:

Book M, p. 139-140 Apr 22, 1809 Michael McElrath (Spartanburgh) to James Vernon (same); for $10 sold 150 ac on N side of Middle Tygar R; border: W & N-James Vernon and S & E-John McElrath and Gabriel Benson. Witness William Moore, William Cornwell, and Alexr Jordan. Signed Michael McElrath. Wit. oath Nov (omitted), 1809 William Moore to John Collins. Rec. Nov. 7, 1809

Book N, p. 61-62 Oct 22, 1811 Samuel Nesbett (Spartanburgh), attorney for James Johnston (Logan County, Ky), to William Ford (Spartanburgh), for $100 sold 200 ac on S side of S Tygar R and on both sides of Piegon Roost Br; border, all vacant; grant Dec. 3, 1792 Gov. Charles Pinckney to James Johnston, Witness Page York, William Cornwell, and Isaiah Bright, Signed Samuel Nesbett. Wit. oath Nov. 13, (omitted) Page Rork to Burrell Bobo.

We know from the 1810 and 1820 Federal Census records for Spartanburg that William Cornwell and Nathan Farmer were neighbors, and when Nathan Farmer died in 1821, Nathan held 200 acres on the South Tyger River, bounded to the properties of Nelson Mason (Mayson) and Sophia Conner, and was adjoined to the properties of Hugh Bayley, Nelson Mayson, James Wilson, and the Spartanburg line (ref. p. 20, Cornell and Allied Families...). The property was not disposed of until Oct 1830.

Two entries referencing Nathan Farmer, in addition to the two existing entries (ref. p. 23, Cornell and Allied Families...) were:

Book O, p.77-78 Nov 10. 1813 John Farmer (Greenville Dist) to Daniel and John Robettson (Spartanburgh); for $260 sold 103 ac on S Tygar; grant to John Farmer. Witness John Vaughan, Nathan Farmer, and William Alkins. Signed John Farmer's mark. Wit. oath Jan 10 1814 John Vaughan to Michl Miller. Rec. Jan. 18, 1814.

Book R, p. 154-155 Feb. 25, 1820 John B Hodgens (Spartanburgh) to Joshua Conner (Greenville Dist); for $60 sold 82 ac on both sides of Long Br of Maple Swamp Cr of S Tyger R; border: Nathan Farmer, James Robertson, John B Hodgens, Jesse Foster, and Greenville line. Witness Philip A Lester to Thomas Ferguson. Rec. Nov. 20, 1820
The first entry references the original grant to John Farmer and references Nathan Farmer as a witness.

Nathan's wife, Margaret "Peggy" Wheeler was the daughter of John Achilles Wheeler, who was a land owner with over 440 acres on Rich Mountain, which is the dividing line between the Greenville and Spartanburg districts.
